The Annandale Volunteer Fire Department (AVFD), a not for profit 501(c)3 organization, is seeking motivated individuals to serve as EMTs, firefighters and administrative members. Every day our members are making a difference in the community and the lives of the citizens we serve.
If you are at least 18 years old, in good physical condition and plan on being in the Northern Virginia area for the next 3-5 years, then consider joining us.
Individuals who are interested in providing emergency services can either become EMS-Only members (EMTs) or Firefighters (are also required to be EMTs or paramedics). In addition, Operational members are required to take part in administrative duties to support the business needs of AVFD (see below).
Administrative (Admin) Members
Admin members focus on the business side of AVFD and participate in fundraising/bingo operations, recruitment/retention, canteen operations, marketing and promotion of AVFD, and community outreach/public service events.
There are several steps required in order to become an AVFD member.
You can express interest by going to the “Become a Member” tab on our website and review the information listed there. Once you provide your name, address and other contact information, you will receive an email from our Membership Committee. This email will list our expectations of you as a new member. Please read this carefully, as we expect you to adhere to them if you join AVFD. Running a corporation and providing emergency response to our citizens is serious business and we expect our members to be professional in every way. We also expect our operational members to be studious and commit to putting in the time and effort needed to pass the required EMT and/or Firefighter classes. These classes involve intense training in both academic and practical sessions, so focused study and practice outside of class is an absolute must.
If you understand and accept these expectations, you may continue with the process by clicking this link. This link. takes you to the Fairfax County Volunteer Database system where you will provide contact information for us. Our Membership Committee will then contact you to attend an upcoming orientation meeting. At this session, you’ll be given information about AVFD and the time commitments involved. If you choose to fill out an application after this meeting, you will be scheduled for an initial background interview with one of our officers. Should you move past this, your background package will be submitted to the Fairfax County Office of Professional Standards for a more complete background investigation. Note that this process generally takes 30-45 days to complete. If you pass this investigation, we’ll invite you to our next scheduled membership meeting (4th Tuesday of each month).
This is an exciting opportunity to join the AVFD family and we look forward to meeting you in the near future.
